I have had the great pleasure over the last 18 months
to work with St Ives Memory Bay Archive & its partners
The St Ives Trust; Tate St Ives; The LeachPottery;
St Ives School of Painting; Porthmeor Studios;
St Ives Archive and University College Falmouth.
To create a book collating all the recordings/
histories of the artists.

This project started off as a magazine… 30 pages long!
But ended up a full 128 pages. It has been a challenge
and a learning curve both for myself and the writer Janet
Axten, Its been amazing working with the partners and
also the printers Francis Anthony.

The Archive first approached me with the idea of creating
such a book. They had no concept of what they wanted it to
look like, nor how they wanted it to be presented, So i was
given complete design freedom to create a concept/theme,
in which i decided as it was a collation of memories, that i
would design it in such a way to capture this feeling, so that
the reader feels they are part of the journey almost, So the
design began!

Once the ideas and concept was in place, the theme developing,
I started to think about the print, what papers? what feel?
I wanted the book to have an old feel, nothing glossy nor shiny
So i contacted a few local printers, but Francis Anthony had the
perfect source i was after!

I am extremely please with the result. Its got such an amazing texture,
matt finish. you can feel the journey as you skim through which was
exactly what i was after!

So… The it came to the launch! AMAZING feeling to be asked to sign
something you have made! It was held at the Tate in St Ives on 2nd
September 2011. On a delightful sunny eve too!

Heres the write up which was from The St Ives Times and Echo:

“THE St Ives Memory Bay project launched their compellation
of oral history recordings in book form St Ives: Art Colony and
the Community, at the Tate Cafe on Friday evening (Sept. 2).
Over the past three years the volunteers at the St Ives Archive
Centre and the Memory Bay project have been interviewing
people throughout St Ives to record their recollections of the
town, especially with regard to the artists and artistic tradition
of the town. Designed by Sarah-Leigh Wills of HappyDesigner
and coordinated by John Pollard the 128 page book was funded
by the Heritage Lottery Fund and in partnership with: The St Ives
Trust; Tate St Ives; The Leach Pottery; St Ives School of Painting;
Porthmeor Studios; St Ives Archive and University College Falmouth.
Commenting on the book, John Pollard said: “I hope everyone will
be as pleased with the book as we are. It is an excellent concept
and has created a lasting and brilliant record of St Ives.” Pictured
left to right are: St Ives Archive Heritage Manager, Janet Axten;
designer Sarah-Leigh Wills and John Pollard. St Ives: The Art Colony
and the Community is published by the St Ives Archive on behalf of
the Memory Bay Project, is priced at £12.50 and available from the
St Ives Archive in St Andrews Street. ISBN 978-0-9554398-2-7″

Ivan Brunetti’s little classroom-in-a-book Cartooning: Philosophy and Practice is probably my favourite book about drawing comics.

Brunetti gets to the heart of what makes a comic a comic. It’s not a book that tries to teach you the right way to draw, or the proper tools to use. Rather it focuses on the philosophy of comics-making and the distillation of both art and story into simple pictograms and beats.

Bosinver won the bronze ‘Large Self Catering Establishment of the Year’ award, presented by the very suave and dashing Ben Fogle. They are very proud to have come in the top three with some very stiff competition from all over Cornwall. They hope that their guests will feel confident when booking with them that they are maintaining their high standards and delivering great holidays.

As for Graphic design I have been working with a couple of clients on different projects:

SouthwestCRM – They have enjoyed meteoric growth since it began trading in 2007. It consists of a small team of IT professionals based in the UK but servicing organisations across Europe. The team specialises in helping businesses to realise the full benefits of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and Document Management systems. We are authorised partners for SugarCRM, info@hand and KnowledgeTree. We develop extensions and integrations between these products and other systems that our customers may be using.

People And Gardens - They supply a day care service for people with physical and emotional impairments. We aim to promote emotional and physical well being through gardening and group activities within a real working environment. We are run by and for people whose lives have been affected by disability.

The Design Against Fur competition, which has expanded every year since its launchin 2001,is open to design students from the fields offashion, design, fine arts, advertising, marketing, graphic design and multi-media. Hundreds of students from across the UK and Ireland submitted designs, interpreting the theme that animals used in the fur industry are ‘fashion victims’. The brief was to convey a compassionate campaign message, in support of millions of animals killed every year for their pelts, in an innovative, contemporary way. For the first time this year, the competition encouraged students to submit designs across a range of media: for either poster, animation or t-shirt.

The winning entries were unveiled by Dr Nick Palmer MP and Judy Mallaber MP at a reception attended by Members of Parliament, design industry representatives, students and tutors. Amongst the judges were journalist, Liz Jones; Cosmopolitan magazine’s Fashion Director, Shelly Vella; advisor to the Mayor of London and head of Harry Barlow Limited, a company that specialises in issues-based campaign communications, Harry Barlow,; Graduating Creatives Manager of Design & Art Direction (D&AD), Rhiannon James,; and graphic design specialist, Lee Ellis.

“The Design Against Fur competition is an ideal opportunity for students to use their design and communication skills to interpret an issues-based brief and their work shows a very good understanding of the use of fur in the fashion industry,” commented Director of Respect for Animals, Nicki Brooks. “Our thanks go out to the students for submitting their highly effective designs and, of course, to their tutors for their enthusiastic support of this competition.”

Winning designer, Sarah-Leigh Wills, explained: “I decided to enter the competition just to build experience as a designer. I never thought that I would stand a chance of coming first. When I received the email confirming that I was the winner, it was life changing. I have learnt so much in doing this and am extremely thankful for the experience.”

“Design Against Fur provided a challenging and provocative brief for our students this year,” added Sarah-Leigh’s tutor, Bryan Clark, who is Senior Lecturer on BA(Hons) Graphic Design at University College Falmouth. “We were delighted that Sarah-Leigh went on to win, encapsulating the issue with such an iconic and powerful message. Uncovering such a simple and unique vision was great for us to see given the nature of a subject so strewn with clichés. We can only emphasize the importance of this poignant brief to our students and the issues that it raises and promotes.”

People and Gardens supply a day care service for people with physical and emotional impairments. We aim to promote emotional and physical well being through gardening and group activities within a real working environment. We are run by and for people whose lives have been affected by disability.

Participants have a range of disabilities from severe autism to Down’s Syndrome. Many have issues with self esteem, confidence and social exclusion. People and Gardens provides the basis for improving independence, personal development, happiness and self-belief.

We currently have 45 people in the group, some full-time, others attending on a part-time basis, with a wide age range from 16 to 70. Over the last 12 years we have have helped over 160 people to make real improvements in their lives. Many have gone on to live independent lives, to study and finding jobs in the working world.

We have close links with the Eden Project and are based at their Watering Lane Nursery. Most of the placements are funded by Cornwall County Council Adult Social Care and the Cornwall Partnership. We work with other organisations to ensure better support, progress and continuity of care group participants.
