Before we even mention productivity, let’s be honest about who actually runs the Happydesigner household. No laptops, no meetings, no deadlines. Just cats overseeing naps, supervising creativity and appearing at exactly the wrong moment. After years of working alongside Erik and Ernie, and very recently welcoming Eddy into the mix, we have learned that productivity does not always look like sitting still and staring at a screen.
This article is inspired by real studio life, real cats and very real interruptions. No fake science, just lessons picked up between sketches, snack breaks and fur-covered keyboards.
Meet the Cats Behind the Chaos
Before sharing what we have learned, it feels only right to introduce the team.
Erik
Erik is the ginger-and-white rescue cat who sparked the Oh Erik! brand and continues to inspire illustrations, stories and products at Happydesigner. Writing as himself across the Oh Erik! world, Erik shares life from the sofa, the studio and anywhere there is a good patch of sunlight.
He is expressive, opinionated and proudly holds the self-appointed title of Chief Fluff Officer. If creativity needs confidence, humour and the occasional dramatic sigh, Erik is always ready to demonstrate.
Ernie
Ernie is calm, thoughtful and quietly in charge. He observes everything, decides very little out loud, and somehow always knows when it is time for a nap.
Where Erik brings bold ideas and big expressions, Ernie brings balance. He represents the slower side of creativity. The thinking. The waiting. The ideas form while it looks like nothing is happening at all.

Eddy
Eddy is the newest arrival, a tiny black kitten adopted from a local cat sanctuary. Small paws, enormous personality.
From the moment he arrived, Eddy filled the house with zoomies, squeaks and fearless exploration. He settled in almost instantly and made it very clear that quiet working hours are optional. Eddy is joyful chaos in kitten form and a daily reminder that creativity can be lively, loud and wonderfully unpredictable.

Lesson One: The Art of the Guilt-Free Break
Cats rest often and without apology. A short nap, a stretch, a wander, then straight back to whatever was interesting before. Humans tend to do the opposite and push through until focus disappears completely.
What we have learned is simple. Short, intentional breaks support creativity rather than disrupt it.
Things we try to remember
- Step away from the screen regularly
- Stretch or move for a couple of minutes
- Rest your eyes by looking away from the screen
- Stop before exhaustion sets in
Erik strongly supports this lesson and recommends naps in sunny spots whenever possible.
Lesson Two: Curiosity Beats Being Busy
Cats investigate everything. Boxes. Pens. Paper. Shadows on the wall. That curiosity is exactly how the ‘Oh Erik!’ world began. By paying attention to everyday moments, an entire creative universe grew from simple observation.
Being busy does not always mean being productive. Being curious often gets you further.
Ways we invite curiosity into our work
- Ask what if before asking how long
- Sketch ideas without worrying about the final result
- Experiment with styles and materials
- Follow interesting tangents for a few minutes
Some of our favourite Happydesigner ideas started as playful experiments that had no clear goal at the beginning. Curiosity gave them room to grow.
Lesson Three: Creative Chaos Is Not the Enemy
Cats are not tidy creatures. Things get nudged, knocked over and occasionally sat on. Creative work can look very similar before everything comes together.
Sketches overlap. Notes multiply. Ideas collide.
What creative chaos can look like
- Half-finished sketches everywhere
- Moodboards that make sense later
- Notes written in several places
- Ideas that combine unexpectedly
Clarity often arrives after exploration, not before it. Tidying up too early can tidy away good ideas along with the mess.

Lesson Four: Be Where Your Paws Are
When cats rest, they really rest. When they play, nothing else exists. Their focus is complete.
Humans are excellent multitaskers and often not very satisfied because of it.
Simple ways we stay present
- Focus on one task at a time
- Silence notifications during creative work
- Finish small tasks fully before starting new ones
- Pause briefly between tasks instead of rushing
Being present does not mean working all the time. It means giving each task your attention, then letting it go properly.
What This Looks Like at Happydesigner
At Happydesigner, creativity and playfulness go hand in hand. Spending quality time with our fur-family is an essential part of daily life, along with laughter, experimentation and the freedom to step away when needed.
We do not claim cats magically improve productivity. What they do offer is a reminder that creativity works best when:
- Curiosity is encouraged
- Rest is respected
- Playfulness is allowed
These ideas shape how we approach illustration, branding and character design every day.

Final Thoughts from the Studio Floor
Erik, Ernie and Eddy have never written a to-do list or checked an inbox before breakfast. Yet somehow, they move through their days with confidence, curiosity and excellent timing.
At Happydesigner, we take inspiration wherever we find it. Sometimes that inspiration is a sketch. Sometimes it is a cat asleep on a notebook.
If this article does one thing, we hope it reminds you that productivity does not have to be stressful to be effective. Take breaks. Stay curious. Embrace a little chaos. And if someone claims your keyboard as a pillow, that might be your cue to pause.
